The GR221, also known as the “Ruta de Pedra en Sec” (Dry Stone Route), is a spectacular long-distance hiking trail that winds through the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, the trail stretches for approximately 140 kilometers from Port d’Andratx in the southwest to Pollença in the northwest of the island, passing steep cliffs, verdant valleys, fragrant pine forests, and ancient olive groves. The GR221 largely follows old, sometimes recently restored, dry stone walls and shepherds’ paths that have connected the region’s villages for centuries. Some sections lead along former charcoal burners’ trails and old mule tracks to remote farms or watchtowers. Mallorcans are particularly proud of the black vulture (Voltor Negre) and the midwife toad (Ferreret), which are among the native inhabitants of the Balearic Islands. When you hike in Mallorca, you’ll experience the traditional way of life of the islanders as it was hundreds of years ago. You’ll not only enjoy nature but also discover traces of Mallorcan history and culture. This unique combination of nature, culture, and history makes the hiking trail one of the most beautiful in Europe.
The GR221 “Best of” program combines hiking pleasure with culture and leads you to the most beautiful places in the Serra de Tramuntana: Valldemossa, Deià, and Sóller. This route is the perfect blend of Mediterranean lifestyle, picturesque villages, and impressive landscapes. A highlight is the option to combine the stage from Deià to Sóller with the famous Painters’ Path (“Cami de Pintor”) – a coastal path that runs directly along the sea and invites you to take refreshing swimming breaks along the way. Biniaraix, with its famous gorge, is another special stop on this program. Experience the Serra de Tramuntana at its most culturally and scenically captivating.
TRIP PLAN
3 excursions!
5 days Program!
Valldemossa – Deia
This excursion goes through oak forests, passing old charcoal kilns and lime kilns until reaching Puig Caragoli. We descend a pass to one of the most picturesque mountain villages, Deia. If the weather is fine, you can take a dip in Cala de Deia.
Deia a Sóller – Camí d es Pintors
The easiest route of our week’s hiking runs along the “Camí des Pintors”, passing by old houses from the 13th century. The path of Arab origin used to serve as a link between the villages of Soller and Deia. If the weather is fine, we can end the day on the beach of Sóller. There is also the possibility of taking a walk through the mountain village of Sóller, considered the “capital” of the Tramuntana.
The Biniaraix ravine
The Biniaraix Gorge is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Tramuntana Mountains and has been declared a “public cultural asset”. This cobbled hiking route is a fascinating combination of stone steps, rocks, water and wild vegetation.
