The GR221, also known as the “Ruta de Pedra en Sec” (Dry Stone Route), is a spectacular long-distance hiking trail that winds through the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, the trail stretches for approximately 140 kilometers from Port d’Andratx in the southwest to Pollença in the northwest of the island, passing steep cliffs, verdant valleys, fragrant pine forests, and ancient olive groves. The GR221 largely follows old, sometimes recently restored, dry stone walls and shepherds’ paths that have connected the region’s villages for centuries. Some sections lead along former charcoal burners’ trails and old mule tracks to remote farms or watchtowers. Mallorcans are particularly proud of the black vulture (Voltor Negre) and the midwife toad (Ferreret), which are among the native inhabitants of the Balearic Islands. When you hike in Mallorca, you’ll experience the traditional way of life of the islanders as it was hundreds of years ago. You’ll not only enjoy nature but also discover traces of Mallorcan history and culture. This unique combination of nature, culture, and history makes the hiking trail one of the most beautiful in Europe.
The GR222 is another long-distance hiking trail on Mallorca that intersects the GR221 at the Lluc Sanctuary. It connects the coastal region around Artà in the northeast of the island with the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.
Combining both routes offers exciting possibilities: While the GR221 explores the spectacular mountain scenery of the Tramuntana, the GR222 leads through unspoiled landscapes and traditional villages. This allows you to combine both trails into a unique hiking trip.
You can experience the entire route from Andratx to Cala Ratjada in 2 weeks or divide it into two sections: 7 days and 9 days. This way, you can discover the island according to your own preferences.
This program covers the southern part of the grand Mallorca crossing. From Andratx to Sóller, you’ll hike through the impressive Serra de Tramuntana mountain range – with its rugged coastline, traditional villages, and spectacular mountain trails. The tour can be ideally combined with the northern part of the Mallorca crossing, allowing you to experience the island in its entirety, step by step.
Trip Plan
7 Days Program!
Sant Elmo – Ses Fontanelles
The first stage starts from the southernmost town of the Tramuntana, Sant Elmo. Soon we find ourselves in the rugged mountain landscape of Mallorca and can enjoy the view over the entire mountain range that awaits us for the week.
Ses Fontanelles – Estellencs
Directly from the accommodation, the path goes uphill towards Mola d’Esclop, which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the south of Mallorca. The path then continues towards the coast to Estellencs.
Estellencs – Esporles
The first stage starts from the southernmost village of the Tramuntana, the tranquil mountain village of Estellencs. We walk along well-laid paths through pine forests and the sea is our constant companion. We walk leisurely and enjoy the gentle sea breeze.
Esporles – Valldemossa
This hike takes you through holm oak forests, past old charcoal and lime kilns to Valldemossa. In the afternoon you have time for a short stroll through what is probably the most famous village in Mallorca.
Valldemossa – Sóller
You can start the hike in Deia. The trail first leads you across the Bay of Deiá. Or you can start directly in Valldemossa and hike through a holm oak forest to the high plateau, which drops steeply to the sea to the north. On the plateau, you’ll come across the over 100-year-old bridle path of Habsburg Ludwig Salvator and enjoy a stunning panorama.
